The Shiamak Davar institute for performing arts (SDIPA) was founded by the Zoroastrian Gujarati speaking boy born on 19th October 1961 at a time when contemporary and jazz dance forms were not so well known in India and when boys performing jazz were laughed upon. Shiamak went on to become one of the finest and well-known choreographers in India. He choreographed his first
He choreographed his first Bollywood number for the movie DIL TOH PAGAL HAI and had Karishma Kapoor, Madhuri Dikshit to Shah Rukh Khan dance at his tunes. The Bollywood actors like Sushant Singh Rajput, Shahid Kapoor and Varun Dhavan have been a part of Shiamak dance troupe before making it big in the industry, Shiamak has won many awards for his choreography, Shiamak also choreographs and designs well-known awards like the IIFA and FILMFARE.
Davar won the 1997 National Film Award for Best Choreography for his work in the film Dil to Pagal Hai, as well as the Lycra MTV Style Awards 2007 for ‘Most Stylish Song in a Film’, for the song “Dhoom Again” in the Indian film Dhoom 2. In July 2011, Davar received an honorary doctorate from Middlesex University in recognition of his contribution to entertainment in India and throughout the world.
Shiamak not only runs a dance company but also trains individuals of all ages fr 5 to 85 years across various batches in Mumbai. he also does stage shows and trains the potential students to become performers, choreographers, dance teachers, or be a part of his dance troupe where the students get a chance to perform on stage with celebrities.
I myself have been a student of Shiamak in 2003 to 2004 and I must say that learning with Shiamak isn’t just about learning dance. Shiamak grooms you to be a performer and brings out the best in you in terms of self-confidence. I have been fortunate enough to be trained by Shiamak personally. What I say about him as a person, he is the calmest, most composed, patient and encouraging teacher that you could ask for.
His motto ”HAVE FEET WILL DANCE” does complete justice to what he teaches, he can even make a 2 left footed person enjoy to dance. I had the privilege of training under Shiamak for a year himself and the best way to describe him would be ‘‘humble”.
The philantrophist in Shiamak makes him teach dance to the underprivileged and the mentally challenged kids and he runs a Victory Arts Foundation (VAF) to help the kids experience the pleasure of expression through dance.
Shiamak’s dedication to his art and his unfaltering belief in God and prayer makes him a true role model who we all can look up to.
Given a chance, I would love to train under Shiamak again because it’s his humility that makes him the best choreographer in today’s time in Bollywood.
A big salute to you Shiamak sir.
